PLEASE BOOKMARK THIS PAGE FOR THE LATEST UPDATES FROM DUNES LEARNING CENTER
UPDATE AS OF THURSDAY JULY 16, 2026
You may have seen that air quality in our region has reached unhealthy levels today. We want to let you know that we are monitoring conditions closely and following recommendations to reduce time and exertion outdoors.
After a brief, low-key outing on the lake this morning, campers have moved indoors for the remainder of the day and will stay inside through the evening as conditions warrant. Rest assured, camp spirit is fully intact! Campers are playing games, dancing, and even creating their own imaginative "invasive species" in a hands-on activity with our partners at Indiana Dunes National Park.
We will continue to monitor air quality throughout the week and adjust our schedule as needed. If conditions improve, we'll gradually and thoughtfully return to outdoor activities. As always, camper health and safety guide every decision we make.
UPDATE AS OF WEDNESDAY JULY 15, 2026
All campers and staff at Dunes Learning Center are safe following a brief precautionary lockdown on campus this afternoon.
At approximately 12:15pm, the DLC campus went into lockdown after local authorities pursued suspects fleeing on foot from a nearby vehicle crash. The suspects were quickly apprehended and taken into custody. The lockdown lasted less than fifteen minutes.
All campers were off campus at the beach during this time and were never in proximity to the incident. Camp programming continued as normal, and campers were unaffected.
The safety of every child in our care is the highest priority for DLC, and staff followed established safety protocols throughout. We are grateful to local law enforcement for their swift response.
Emergency Communications:
In the event DLC needs to contact parents throughout the week, we will send emails and text messages to listed contacts. If a timely response is needed, we may also follow up with phone calls.
In the event of severe weather, we will share updates after storms have passed. You can also check the Dunes Learning Center website: https://duneslearningcenter.org/updates.
