Inclement Weather Procedures: We monitor the weather on a constant basis as it is the most critical factor in our schedule for the day and the activities planned. Safety is, and will always be, our #1 priority.
Air Quality
We monitor the AQI and limit or omit outdoor activity when necessary to ensure the safety of our campers.
Rain/Thunderstorms with lightning
In the case of predicted rain: We monitor closely and continue to operate as normal with outdoor activities.
If lightning occurs: We immediately move the campers indoors where they are safe, whether or not a watch or warning is issued.
If there is a severe thunderstorm watch: We monitor closely and adapt activities to be close to shelter.
If there is a severe thunderstorm warning: Activities will be moved indoors until the warning is lifted or downgraded to a watch.
Remember to send proper rain gear with your camper!
Tornado/High Winds/Derecho
If a watch is issued: We monitor closely and adapt activities to be close to shelter in the event a warning be issued. Remember- a watch means conditions are favorable for a weather event to occur, not that one necessarily will occur.
If a warning is issued: We take cover in interior rooms with no windows and remain sheltering in place until the warning is lifted or downgraded to a watch. Remember, warnings issued by NWS mean that the weather event is happening, is imminent, or is very likely to occur.
Emergency Communications:
In the event DLC needs to contact parents throughout the week, we will send emails and text messages to listed contacts. If a timely response is needed, we may also follow up with phone calls.
In the event of severe weather, we will share updates after storms have passed. You can also check the Dunes Learning Center website: https://duneslearningcenter.org/updates.
